Cardiologists and health care providers caring for adults with congenital heart disease need to understand the spectrum of life-long consequences associated with congenital heart disease and early surgeries. They need to recognize high-risk patients and refer them appropriately and they need to utilize the ACC/AHA guidelines to understand the principles of management and utilization of tertiary support.  All ACHD patients are referred and evaluated within a regional ACHD program by ACHD cardiologists (competence change) in order to improve quality of life and long term outcomes (performance change).
