Overview
This module reviews the current national and hospital guidelines related to red blood cell transfusion. Current Florida Hospital specific statistics will be presented as well as a review of important transfusion related reactions.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Review Florida Hospital Waterman Red Blood Cell Transfusion statistics.
  2. Identify the risks of blood transfusions.
  3. Evaluate current published studies.
  4. Examine the American Association of Blood Banks Clinical guidelines for red blood cell transfusion.
  5. Review Florida Hospital Waterman's Blood Utilization Guidelines based on current national guidelines.
  6. Investigate non-pharmacological strategies to decrease the need for blood transfusions.
  7. Discuss transfusion related adverse reactions.
